Week in Unfamiliar Environment

For my week in an unfamiliar environment I travelled to Portugal in Carvoeiro with Basia, Carolyn, Amina, Eden to work in an animal sanctuary. We established that Portugal was our best option due to the following reasons..... first being that Carolyn used to live there and knows the area quite well, she has worked in this animal sanctuary before, so she was able to arrange all the times. Since Carolyn still currently owns property there, we were able to stay in the old house free of charge for the week.

Our job at the Animal Sanctuary  was to clean all the cages and care for the animals in general. the First day we were there we cleaned all the sheep manure. The work over the course of a week include; picking up manure, playing with the animals, washing and brushing them. Many of them were badly treated before being rescued and need much attention and well as love and care.

This experience was very challenging as there were over 50 dogs all in an open area. Many of the animals were very aggressive as they were scared we would hurt them. When we tried to come closer to the main house most of the animals became very protective and some what aggressive. I learned that caring for animals is a very difficult task and takes a lot of hard work and commitment.  Over all it was an amazing and educational experience I hope to come back someday and see how the facility is doing.

Service: Charity Cupcakes

For the service part of CAS, I helped my mom bake cupcakes for a charity event in Baden. The cupcakes were for a charity which contribute to distributing waster, food, and educational supplies to the countries in need. I don't recall the name of this charity as it was my first time working for it. My mother and i made approximately 200 cupcakes and I'm not sure about the amount of money that was raised as i was not in charge of sales.

This project greatly helped involved time management as we could not do the cupcakes of a period of days as they had to be as fresh as possible. We had to manage our time greatly and over the course of 2 and half days all the cupcakes were done and ready. Not only did this activity help with time management, but also with team work as i had help from four to five people on of them including Carolyn from my class. These cupcakes were only done successfully as we  all worked together and helped eachother. Carolyn and I were mostly in charge of making the batter for the cupcakes and my mom and her fried did the decorations as we did not have the skills for it.

I truly enjoyed this experience and not only did i learn how to make great cupcakes but also it provided me with a great opportunity to better myself with time management, team work, and leadership.
