Creativity: Sound of Music

Sound Of Music Set Design:
Through out the sound of Music Play I volunteered for helping with the set. We began working on the play in the end of February.

We first had to set out all the boxes and paint them from black to white. we painted one side green to show that the characters were outside whereas on the other side the white marble colour meant that they were inside. Once all the boxes were finished, we began to paint the mountains on the wall in the background. I found this the most difficult because I am not a very good painter and in order to make the mountains look as realistic as possible was a real challenge. The entire wall took about a full week to do and the hard work was worth it because it turned out great.

Towards mid march all members of the play had to come in everyday for 2 hours after school for rehearsal time. By now we had all the props had been chosen and the set was completely done. For the next 2 weeks I had helped with scene changes. Every time I new scene came, backstage I had to move all the boxes and set in certain props. I worked with 3 others girls from 10th grade, it was very stressful at first as I didn't know what goes where and they knew, however eventually we all got a long and I was able to memorize all the positions. I found that working backstage was the most stressful as everything had to be done very quickly and quietly. Also, the props were very heavy and hard to move by yourself, so we always had to work as a team.

I thought it was a very challenging  yet fun experience working back stage as everything was done very stressful and quickly. sometimes I barley had anytime to think or to take a break. It was also very difficult to balance all my school work with the all the time I was putting into the play. I gained a lot of knowledge through this service had I became more aware of time management, working as a group, and work under pressure. Overall I think it was worth all the hard work and sleepless nights doing all my homework because the play turned out fantastic, and it was a great learning experience for the IB. This activity led me to do a lot of team work and learn how to handle being under pressure. This was a very helpful CAS opportunity as the learning outcome were very helpful. I don't  know if I would be able to do the play next  year as I am sure I will have an even wider work load.
